(Photo by Ross MacDonald \/ SNS Group)?\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>John Beaton has been placed under police protection after awarding Celtic a penalty against Motherwell (Source: SNS Group)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A 19-year-old man has been charged after referee John Beaton had his personal details leaked in the wake of the penalty controversy at Wednesday\u2019s Celtic v Motherwell match, Police Scotland have said.<\/p>\n<p>The teenager\u2019s arrest and charge comes after the official and his family were placed under &#8216;police surveillance&#8217;, according to the Scottish Football Association.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday night, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: &#8216;A 19-year-old man, who was earlier arrested, has now been charged in connection with a data protection offence, following a complaint of personal information being shared online relating to a Scottish football official.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;He is due to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court at a later date.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Beaton and his family have been placed under &#8216;police surveillance&#8217; after his personal details were leaked in the wake of the penalty controversy that followed Celtic\u2019s win, the Scottish Football Association revealed.<\/p>\n<p>His decision to penalise Well midfielder Sam Nicholson for handball in a stoppage-time VAR review allowed Celtic to cut the gap on William Hill Premiership leaders Hearts to one point ahead of Saturday\u2019s title decider.<\/p>\n<p>The decision was widely criticised in Scotland and beyond and the Foundation of Hearts, the league leaders\u2019 majority shareholder, expressed extreme concerns over refereeing decisions during the title run-in.<\/p>\n<div class=\"metro-embed__twitter\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"all\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udfe2 Here&#039;s the incident that resulted in Celtic&#039;s winning penalty at Fir Park, following a VAR check!Motherwell vs Celtic &amp; Hearts vs Falkirk reaction | Sky Sports Football now \ud83d\udcfa <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/kwFO6mOH7t\">pic.twitter.com\/kwFO6mOH7t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Sky Sports Scotland (@ScotlandSky) <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ScotlandSky\/status\/2054668446634230151?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 13, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n<p>The SFA said Beaton and his family had spent Thursday night at home under police surveillance &#8216;following a leak of personal details online&#8217; and condemned attempts to compromise the safety of match officials.<\/p>\n<p>The statement added: &#8216;Such vigilantism, motivated by decisions perceived to be right or wrong on a field of play, is a scourge on our national game and we are grateful to Police Scotland for their swift intervention.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We are also clear, sadly, that this is the inevitable consequence of the heightening criticism, intolerance and scapegoating demonstrated this season by media pundits, supporters, official supporters\u2019 groups, clubs, players, managers and former match officials.&#8217;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"419\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/SEI_297018200-c8a2-e1778739612597.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28363266\" alt=\"PABest Celtic&#039;s Kelechi Iheanacho celebrates scoring their side&#039;s third goal from a penalty during the William Hill Premiership match at Fir Park, Motherwell. RESTRICTIONS: PICTURE DESK USE ONLY, NO SALES.\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Kelechi Iheanacho scored a controversial late penalty for Celtic (Credits: Robert Perry\/PA Wire)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The SFA stated it would seek to strengthen its rules to protect match officials.<\/p>\n<p>The governing body added: &#8216;Those who have sought to apportion blame and conspiracy towards match officials to deflect from defeats or perceived injustices throughout the season have contributed to an environment that puts the safety of our staff and match officials in jeopardy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;This is the consequence of a hysterical media narrative, fuelled by irresponsible knee-jerk post-match media interviews, commentary and official social media posts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The cumulative effect impacts on our ability to provide enough referees to service our game at all levels. We will not allow a situation where match officials require special provision to protect their children at school to be considered an occupational hazard.
